About Share a Care for Africa
Share a Care for Africa is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of children in West Africa.
Our Beginning
Our journey began shortly after our first trip to Senegal in 2011. With deep family roots in Medina Wandifa, our father’s hometown, we’ve always considered it part of our community. During that visit, we explored various parts of the country—from Dakar, the bustling capital, to the peaceful beaches of Saly—but the most meaningful part was staying in the small village of Medina Wandifa, where our grandmother and extended family live.
While there, we met the local school’s headmaster, who offered to give us an impromptu tour of the school. Having grown up attending a well-resourced public school, we were struck by the challenging conditions the students faced. The classrooms were overcrowded, materials were worn beyond their usable life, and many buildings were made of unsturdy bamboo. This experience opened our eyes to global educational disparities and fostered a deep sense of gratitude for our own schooling. More importantly, it fueled our compassion for our community and sparked a desire to bridge the gap between those with more and those with less.
Upon returning to the U.S., we felt compelled to take action for the school in Medina Wandifa. Our first initiative was to build a well in the schoolyard, as the entire village relied on a single well located far from the school. You can read more about this initial project on our first project’s page. After completing the well in 2013 and finding ourselves with additional funds, we decided to take on another project for 2014. From that point forward, we aimed to complete a new project each year, focused on improving the quality of life for African children. Where We Are Now
The global pandemic in 2020 brought challenges and changes to many aspects of life, including our work at Share a Care for Africa. The onset of COVID-19 also coincided with all three of us “flocking from the nest” to pursue higher education, which impacted the timeline for our projects. We collectively decided to move away from our “one-project-a-year” goal, choosing instead to focus on ensuring that each initiative is impactful and meaningful for the communities we serve.
Despite these adjustments, our commitment to our mission remains unwavering. We look forward to continuing our service and making a lasting difference for years to come!
